Multi-channel transimpedance amplifier MTI04BS/ MTI04BQ
Transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs) are the preferred choice in industrial measurement for the transformation and amplification of the smallest currents in optoelectronic sensors. The transmission function of a TIA is formed by Ohm’s Law, whereby the resistor required for the current-to-voltage conversion is connected in the feedback path of an operational amplifier. The value of this resistor thereby determines the amplification factor of the TIA. The advantage of this wiring technique, compared to the simple conversion of the current with a passive resistor, lies in the control of the voltage at the sensor input to the applied reference voltage. If the input-side current sensor (e.g. photodiode) is connected between the input of the transimpedance amplifier, that is, the inverting input of the operational amplifier, and the reference voltage is applied to the non-inverting input of the operational amplifier, then the current sensor operates into an ideal short-circuit, that is, it operates as a pure current source with no voltage-dependent factor. This means that a current-correct measurement is carried out. In addition, this wiring technique increases the signal bandwidth because of the effective cancellation of the sensor capacitance. Also, noise is minimized.

IC Types

  • MTI04BD - ‘naked’ chip (die)
  • MTI04BS - 16-pin SOP16 package
  • MTI04BQ - 16-pin QSOP16 package

With the sensor signal amplifier MTI series, MAZeT provides a family of multi-channel amplifier ICs (current-to-voltage conversion transimpedance amplifiers) for sensors with current output. These are distinguished, among other things, by a programmable bandwidth and high amplification.
The ICs are offered in different RoHS compliant housings or - within the scope of customer projects - are also available as ‘naked’ chips (die) for Chip-On-Board (COB) assembly.
The MTI series is currently available in two types, which differ in amplification, noise, bandwidth and operating voltage.

The sensor signal amplifier MTI04B series are 4-channel transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs). They are ideal for the connection of small photodiodes and arrays of up to 20pF input capacitance. The TIAs can be programmed for ampli- fication (for currents from 100nA) and bandwidth (up to 500 KHz) in three stages via the external pads.

Use and Typical Applications

The sensor ICs are particularly suited as amplifiers for sensors with current output in the nA and µA range, such as opto arrays and rows in the UV, VIS, NIR and IR spectra.

This applies typically to applications in the area of industrial sensors (light grid, length, filling level, position, thickness and distance measurement), equipment for surface analysis and temperature measurement (thermal imaging, combustion supervision), detectors for alpha, beta, gamma and x-rays and ions as well as applications for measurement, regulation and control of light and laser sources.
